h-BN (hexagonal boron nitride) is a two-dimensional material that has gained significant attention in the fields of materials science and nanotechnology. Often referred to as "white graphene" due to its structural similarity to graphene, h-BN consists of alternating boron and nitrogen atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice.
Properties
Layered Structure: h-BN has a layered structure that allows it to be easily exfoliated into single or few layers, which is valuable for various applications.
Electrical Insulator: Unlike graphene, which is a conductor, h-BN is an excellent electrical insulator. This property makes it suitable as a dielectric material in electronic devices.
High Thermal Conductivity: h-BN exhibits excellent thermal conductivity, making it useful in thermal management applications, particularly in electronics.
Chemical Stability: The material is chemically stable and resistant to oxidation, which enhances its longevity and applicability in various environments.
Electronics: h-BN is used as a substrate for graphene and other 2D materials, providing a smooth and insulating layer that enhances device performance.
Nanocomposites: Due to its mechanical strength and thermal properties, h-BN is incorporated into polymer matrices to produce nanocomposites with improved thermal conductivity and mechanical strength.
Optoelectronics: h-BN is being explored for use in optoelectronic devices, including photodetectors and light-emitting diodes, due to its wide bandgap and optical transparency.
