Niobium Ditelluride (NbTe₂)
NbTe₂ is a Group-V transition metal ditelluride, closely resembling TaTe₂ and metallic in nature. The crystal is derived from a distorted 1T phase, adopting a monoclinic structure with space group C2/m. Owing to a Charge Density Wave (CDW)-type distortion, the Nb atoms undergo periodic aggregation, forming in-plane "zigzag / ribbon-like clusters,"which give the lattice pronounced in-plane anisotropy. NbTe₂ exhibits metallic conductivity, a charge-density-wave order observable at low temperatures, and has been reported to display superconductivity as well as Kondo/correlated-electron behavior. It is frequently used as a model system for studying the competition between CDW and superconductivity in low-dimensional metals.
